Moonscar is, to my knowledge, the only symphonic black metal one-woman show to this date. And what a fierce yet melodic show does she put on! The artist name is „Absense“, the real name is Maria Brkc of Thessaloniki, Greece.
On 6th of October 2023 she released her second album which turns out to be a 35 min killer. 6 tracks of fine state-of-the-art compositions make those minutes pass like nothing. Now here is everything in a nutshell: a fierce vocal performance including spoken, hauntingly melodic and clear voice parts, an always present floating keyboard which brings in the basic atmosphere, in addition some piano solos, all this driven by ongoing double bassdrums, guitar in the well known BM style.
Most of the songs are midtempo, so no blastbeats or fast outbreaks which could have been expected when compared to fellow artists in this genre. And to be honest, can you imagine Limbonic Art in mid tempo with vocals like Asagraum? At metal-archives.com Maria herself gives Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth as similar artist and I kind of disagree, for Moonscar is nowhere near CoF, and if considering Dimmu Borgir then just the very early years. The one other thing that Moonscar can be compared to Dimmu Borgir is the distinctive sound: the instruments are well balanced and clearly recognizeable. The keys give an overall warm and harmonic feeling to the songs. There are no disruptive compository elements and only some dissonant guitar picks (for it is still BM !!). The lyrics are kind of dystopic: visions of mass and self destruction, melancholy and darkness. Luckily the lyrics are all given on the bandcamp site so you can make up your mind to them yourself!
